The Englishman John Ernest Williamson is regarded as a pioneer of underwater photography. With the aid of his invention the ‘Photosphere’ – an underwater chamber with a hatch at the end of a long tube – he was able to capture photos and film footage in the deepest depths of the sea. His feature-length docu-fiction film WONDERS OF THE SEA features stunning images of marine life, dives and shipwreck explorations. This brand new restoration by the Austrian Film Museum, which drew on material from archives in Austria, France, Australia and the Netherlands, celebrates its world premiere in Bonn.

Stephen Horne (piano, flute, accordion)

Stephen Horne begleitet seit zwanzig Jahren Stummfilme. Er ist ›Hauspianist‹ des Londoner National Film Theatre, spielt aber auch an allen anderen wichtigen Veranstaltungsorten in Großbritannien, wie dem Barbican Centre und der Tate Modern. Er hat Musik für DVDs, BBC-Fernsehproduktionen und Stummfilminstallationen in Museen aufgenommen. Er tritt regelmäßig international auf, seine Stummfilmbegleitungen bei den Filmfestspielen in Pordenone, Telluride und Berlin in den letzten Jahren fanden große Anerkennung. Seine Filmmusik zu A COTTAGE ON DARTMOOR, die er im New Yorker Lincoln Center, der Washington National Gallery of Art und beim San Francisco Silent Film Festival aufgeführt hat, ist inzwischen als BFI-DVD erhältlich.

Stephen Horne has been accompanying silent films for 20 years. Based at London’s National Film Theatre, but playing at all the major UK venues such as the Barbican Centre and Tate Modern, he has recorded music for DVD releases, BBC TV screenings and museum installations of silent films. He regularly performs internationally and in recent years his accompaniments have met with acclaim at the Pordenone, Telluride and Berlin Film Festivals. He has performed his score for A COTTAGE ON DARTMOOR at New York’s Lincoln Center, Washington’s National Gallery of Art and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. It is now available on BFI DVD, while his other work on DVD includes R.W. Paul: THE COLLECTED FILMS, SOUL OF YOUTH (included on TREASURES FROM AMERICAN ARCHIVES 3) and the Imperial War Museum’s forthcoming release THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. Frank Bockius (drums, percussion)

Frank Bockius studied rhythmics at the Musikhochschule Trossingen. Since then he has been working as a drum teacher, lecturer at the Musikhochschule and freelance musician. He worked for many years in the jazz quintet `whisper hot` and the percussion band `TIMPANICKS`. He also worked in the fields of early music, Latin, flamenco, dance theater and music for children. Together with Günter Buchwald and many other international colleagues he has accompanied silent movies for years. Various activities at home and abroad at the Jazz Festival Leipzig 92`, the Jazz Music Days Cyprus 99`, the Film Festival Kyoto 01`, and since 2001 regularly at the Silent Film Festivals in Pordenone and Bologna, Italy, Sodankylä Finland, London, Paris, San Francisco and others. In addition, there are productions at the Theater Basel, Freiburg and with the SWR.
