An ordinary office clerk is the constant butt of his colleagues’ jokes. But when the poor misfit manages to scrape together enough money to buy himself a fine overcoat, his fortunes take a turn for the better. Until the overcoat – which brought him the professional recognition he had been longing for – is robbed from him. This seminal work of Soviet silent cinema, directed by the duo Kozincev and Trauberg, is based on stories by the famous Ukrainian writer Hohol’. George Eastman Museum’s new restoration finally does full justice to the film’s visual style, which was influenced by German Expressionism.
