A prime example of the socio-critical cinema of the late silent era, this semi-fictional, semi-documentary film examines the lives of vagrants. At the end of the 1920s, around half a million vagrants roamed Austria and Germany. The film focuses on their social exclusion and portrays the harsh reality of life on the margins of society. The “King of the Vagabonds” Gregor Gog, who founded the “Brotherhood of Vagabonds” in 1927, can be seen in a supporting role. DER VAGABUND has only survived in an abridged Dutch version, which served as the basis for this new restoration.
