Wie könnte die Welt in 100 Jahren aussehen? Diese Frage nimmt sich die 1926 entstandene Slapstick-Komödie WHAT’S THE WORLD COMING TO? zu Herzen und zeichnet mit einem Augenzwinkern ein Jahr 2026 (also fast unsere Gegenwart!), in dem Frauen und Männer ihre Geschlechterrollen völlig vertauscht haben. Ehemann Claudia bleibt alleine zu Hause, während Ehefrau Billie, eine erfolgreiche Geschäftsfrau, zur Arbeit geht und als Schürzenjägerin mit anderen Herren flirtet. Faszinierend ist auch die futuristische Welt vor der Haustür. Dieses Zukunftsbild stammt – wohlgemerkt – aus der Feder vierer Herren, von denen einer kein Geringerer als Stan Laurel war. „Furious Future“ (wilde Zukunft) war zunächst der Arbeitstitel dieses Films aus den Hal Roach Studios, der sogenannten „Lachfabrik der Welt“. 2015 wurde WHAT’S THE WORLD COMING TO? vom San Francisco Silent Film Festival auf Grundlage einer 16mm-Kopie aus dem Nachlass des berühmten Filmsammlers und -historikers William K. Everson restauriert, dem einzigen noch existierenden Material des Films. Dieses Jahr wird er nicht nur in Bonn auf der großen Leinwand zu sehen sein, sondern ist auch Teil der umfangreichen DVD-/Blu-ray-Box „Cinema’s First Nasty Women“, die Ende August erscheint.
This fantastic farce comedy looks a hundred years into the future when men have become more like women and women more like men. The leaning of the modern woman to the masculine has aroused the query “What’s the world coming to?” And in this picturization of a specific example of what the next hundred years may bring. Hal Roach predicts a very masculine woman and very effeminate man.
According to his prediction, the tables will have been very much turned. The “blushing” groom carries the bouquet while the bride places the ring on the third finger of his left hand. The girl’s father-in-law instead of the man’s mother-in-law is the objectionable “in-law”; the husband in crimps, lacy pajamas and silk coverlet, awaits the return of his spouse in the “wee” hours of the morning. […] Clyde Cook and Katherine Grant are very happily cast in this altogether unusual and diverting comedy.
