After his debut with the crime thriller SCHWARZE ROSEN (1912), he made numerous sensational and adventure films from 1915 onwards, based on his own scripts and in his own production, which makes him appear today as an early author-filmmaker, and with which he earned the reputation of a "dynamite director". Even in the sound film era, the range of genres he served extended from science fiction (EIN UNSICHTBARER GEHT DURCH DIE STADT, 1933) to the predator film (DER DSCHUNGEL RUFT, 1935). Classified as a "fellow traveler" of National Socialism, after about a hundred films in post-war cinema he no longer found a connection.
