Festivals like the Bonn International Silent Film Festival would not be possible if not for the valiant efforts of film archives in restoring and making available the films preserved within their vaults. While an archive, by definition, is built to last the ages, many film collections - and, in several cases, the institutions themselves - are under threat. The reasons for this are manifold: an acute lack of resources, unfavourable climate conditions (only made worse by global warming), the lack of an official mandate or other necessary legal instruments, interference from government and other official bodies, or even wars between or within nations. In all cases, the consequences for the survival of the film heritage can be drastic. During this online discussion, we will hear from representatives of different film heritage institutions from different parts of the world about their work to save and protect but also actively promote the film heritage under difficult conditions. In addition to the invited speakers, all participants are strongly encouraged to actively participate in the discussion and to share their own personal experiences.
In English.
The discussion will take place via ZOOM. Please register with elisabeth.lewerenz@film-ist-kultur.de by Friday 19th August 2022, 6 pm CEST.
Participation in the event is limited.
